News for the Fall

My shortfilm Rush (2009) has been chosen for Falstaff International Film festival in Stratford-upon-Avon, Great Britain, 14-20 November.
more info: Av-Arkki

and for the shortlisting & film book catalogue of Exground Film Festival in Wiesbaden, Germany, 13-22 November.

My solo show Asua/ Résider will open at Centre Culturel Francais, Cable Factory, on the 25th of November at 17-19. Warmly welcome!

Art Fair Suomi had roughly over 2000 visitors this year! I want to thank everybody who helped organizing and constructing the show for over 600 works of art and 250 artists. Although now completely exhausted, it was fun to see such a spirit in making Finnish contemporary art more known and accessible to a wider audience.
See you next year!

Building Art

We finished building the expo at Espace le Carré yesterday. It looks quite nice despite all the struggle we experienced while constructing it. I met with Outi in the morning, a Finnish girl living and working in Paris since a couple of years now who came to Lille to see my show, had a coffee and a stroll, and tried to enjoy the beautiful autumn weather. It is always nice to discuss differences between the French and the Finnish, as there are a few. As I´m still in a flu, I went straight home after a quick take-away lunch at my favorite bio food restaurant Envies de Saison. The autumn is further here than in Finland, trees in bright colours.

Tomorrow, after the opening, we take an early morning train to Paris with my lovely translator Salla, and catch up with Outi and Olivier, a French sculptor for a visit at the Centre Pompidou`s exhibition Elles, a show on women artists in French Museum of Modern Art collections. As the art world is still a world of men (at least statistically), I am eager to see what kind of art the National Museum in France buys from women artists.

On saturday evening I take the plane back to Helsinki. We start constructing Art Fair Suomi on monday morning with MUU and the Union of Photographer Artists.

Funding of Media Art

News on Media Art & Funding

The suggestions for the state budget of 2010 for the Ministry of Education have arrived. At a quick glance, the numbers look victorious, taking notice of the over half a year of bombarding of the ministry with our together with other over 13 media arts organizations` demands to enhance and separate the amount of money shared for media arts in Finland. We didn`t get as much as we plead, but this is a good start. Looks like the first victory is here!
I couldn`t be more glad. In time, more will follow.

We co-founded Mediataideverkosto ry together with major media arts organizations in Finland during the past year.

Also good things coming up for the artist pensions is that their amount is being redefined in relation to sharing the budget. Important to take this into notice, as the pensions need to be doubled quickly to the amount they were prior to the recession of the 1990s.

Strategy & articles

Openings in France went great. A lot of people, including the politicians of culture and the city, and a mayor. I gave 2 interviews to local and regional newspapers. It was was nice, only a little challenging in French. And two speeches at the press release and for the guest politicians. In French.

We are building a strategy at the board of the artist association at work. I really like theory, and enjoy having the possibility to use all the knowledge I have gained during my studies at the Sibelius- Academy. 18 credits, since last September. Yay.

Espace 36 Association d`Art Contemporain, France

This week, I´m working on a new archive film for my solo show in a small gallery hosted by a Contemporary Art Association Espace 36 in Northern France. The show opens next month.

I will also prepare two photo installations for the gallery and a simultanious small show next door in the Public library, and a new video together with photographs on demonstrations for a group show called Trickle- Down Theory at Korjaamo. There will be a lot of Carrefour and street life, as the curator wanted. The opening is one day before the show in France. So obviously, I will be rather installing & sweating for a new show in France instead of sipping nice wine with the other artists of the group show at the Helsinkian gallery at the time of the opening.

At work, we are finishing the annual report for year 2008 by next week.

Pixels and trams

Yesterday we opened Pixelache festival at the MUU gallery. Signals from the south is a very nice exhibition I must say, emphasizing the meaning and politics of change. It deals with issues such as new ways of using electricity or women`s empowerment, offering the viewer a broad and mind-stimulating experience for all five senses. Well done Juha & Nathalie. I say no more - go and see it for yourself.

In the evening I went to Korjaamo, an old tram hall rapidly changed into a sizzling culture centre in Töölö, where Riiko Sakkinen had a really nice painting opening. I ended up being invited to the private dinner afterwards. There I listened to some of the by far weirdest speeches I have even heard and probably will ever hear! Sentimental and fun. Having spoken with Janne for the past couple of hours, who works for a museum in Helsinki, at almost dawn, I finally wrapped the night up and headed home in a cab. It was a wise decision thinking of the early morning wakeup for the work committee meeting.

Art and film business

©Hanna Ojamo 2009.

I`m currently editing my new film for an exhibition in France in April. At the same time, I have to prepare a photo installation for a smaller space next door and a video/photo work for a group show simultaniously at Korjaamo gallery/ Vaunuhalli. There are 72 artists curated in a show called Trickle-Down Theory by Riiko Sakkinen.

The openings are 17th in Helsinki and 18th April in France.

Sibelius Academy Arts Management

In my studies at the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki, I`m now starting a course of leadership in cultural organizations with a strategic leadership case & workshop.

Having mainly led a 1,5-2 weeks of a strong on-and-off flu & fever in bed recently, I welcome the change with great joy. Seems like my timing for sickness was a status quo as half of the Helsinki art world has been sick this february. However, as others were enjoying their skiing holidays, I was at the office full days staring at figures and facts about finance, planning the year, and organizing. Nice and quiet though, but such a cold week I felt my head freezing just over the 5-minute metro trip to work.

I look forward to spring. The first sign of spring appeared yesterday evening in the form the courier. He called that I finally had a package from France from my gallery. I was walking on river Porvoo at the moment in a snow storm. Rushing back to Helsinki for the evening I received the special delivery on my new film - the raw material arriving 2.nd time in 5 cassettes- and this time without no errors or mistakes in it! The spring might eventually come for me too.
